I am interested in the DPRK as a vastly different society. Anthropology is supposed to be about the ‘other’. What could be more alien than a Stalinist-Confucian society at the edge of Asia?
My Korean language is not really coming along very well. I only studied a few words. I have however been genning up on both Japanese and Mandarin which are useful.
In my independent study I am employing principles of ‘Patchwork Ethnography’. Patchwork Ethnography acknowledges the barriers to fieldwork that face the modern possibly feminised, possibly disabled field worker.
At the moment I am listening to the NK News podcast and I have ordered a book about North Korea as a workers paradise.
